Registration Now Open for Out and About Wright: Wright and Mid-Century Modernism in Cleveland and Northeast Ohio

On Saturday, April 9, Out and About Wright participants will have the opportunity to visit not one, not even three, but five Wright-designed private residences in Northeast Ohio. Once home to a thriving manufacturing industry, Cleveland is re-emerging along the banks of Lake Erie as a Midwest center for art and architecture. Before the region saw the landmark construction of the new I. M. Pei-designed Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it already had a varied and interesting architectural heritage, including six mid-century works by Wright:

Weltzheimer-Johnson House (1948)
Karl A. Staley House (1950)
Nathan and Jeanne Rubin House (1951)
Louis Penfield House (1953)
Alice and Ellis A. Feiman House (1954)
John J. and Syd Dobkins House (1953)

Stepping onto an awaiting tour bus at the Hyatt, Out and About participants will start their day by traveling to Willoughby and North Madison to tour the Staley and Penfield Houses before heading to Canton to see the Dobkins, Feiman and Rubin Houses. In addition to the five Wright houses, participants will also tour a mid-century modern house by Keck & Keck and another by local architect Arthur ‘Marko’ Marks. A box lunch will be provided and an evening reception at the Canton Museum of Art will conclude the day’s events.

The sixth Wright-designed house in the region, the Weltzheimer-Johnson House (1948) in Oberlin will be the site of a Leadership Circle Event on Friday, April 8. If you are interested in joining the Leadership Circle, please call 312.663.5500.

On Sunday, April 10, an additional tour will bring together the best of Cleveland’s old and new architecture. The morning/early afternoon tour will feature new builds and recent additions including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (I.M. Pei), Peter B. Lewis Building (Frank Gehry), Cleveland Play House (addition by Philip Johnson), Cleveland Museum of Art (1971 addition by Marcel Breuer; 2009 addition by Rafael Viñoly), Cleveland Institute of Music (addition by Westlake/Reed/Leskosky) and Cleveland Botanical Gardens (addition by Graham Gund). The bus will drop participants back at the Hyatt before proceeding to the Cleveland Hopkins Airport, arriving by 2:00 p.m.

Out and About participants will receive a special rate at the Hyatt Regency Cleveland, set within one of Cleveland’s National Historic Landmarks—The Arcade, a Victorian era five-story iron and glass shopping court. The Hyatt will still honor the FLWBC room block rate (on a space available basis) by calling toll-free 888.421.1442 or direct 216.776.4459.

Registration deadline is Wednesday, March 30 (on a space available basis). Last year’s Out and About in Minneapolis was sold out so early registration is advised.
